As a process to develop the narrative for Game Girls, we developed a creative arts and drama therapy workshop program, led by, then president of the SoCal Drama Therapy Association, Mimi Savage, PhD, RDT-BCT, which was open to all people who identify as women in the Skid Row community.
The workshops met up to three times per week, sometimes with guest facilitators including author and artist Mady Schutzman and playwright and performer, Jean-Claude van Itallie, and took on a life of their own beyond the film. The women who participated wrote stories that formed a play, which many of the women performed at Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and ArtShare in the Arts District in Downtown LA. Additionally, many of the women involved in the workshops formed a long-lasting community of support amongst one another.
